Orwell is best remembered as one of the greatest author of the 20th century who wrote the most well known dystopian novel of the English language. However, his legacy extends further than simply his skill as a writer. He criticized euphemisms in writing and criticized censorship and imperialism- not just of countries such as Nazi Germany and the USSR but also of the United States and his own British Empire.
In Spain, he fought against fascism and hoped to secure freedom for the Spaniards. His novel about the Spanish Civil War, Homage to Catalonia, is widely considered one of the greatest account of this time period. Even today, Orwell's legacy in the Iberian peninsula is not erased. Across northern Spain, monuments have been erected in his honor. His son, Richard Horatio Blair is currently in Aragon trying to prevent the destruction of trenches from the Spanish Civil War. Thanks to Orwell's contribution to the war in Spain, key pieces of history may yet be protected.
In his two most famous novels, he warned of the danger of the abuse of language. He criticized the corruption of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia and Eastern Europe and warned of a future where humanity was controlled by an oppressive and power-hungry oligarchy. Some have interpreted Orwell's works as a prophecy of the unavoidable future or a call to take up arms against communism. However, Orwell intended for his works to be a warning of the future, rather than an imminent prediction
Orwell's name is almost synonymous with dystopian, so much that an adjective, 'Orwellian', named for him is used to describe a corrupt government or a world similar to 1984. His writing style is well known and he has contributed many words to the English language. Newspeak, doublethink, crimestop, and thoughtpolice were all words used in 1984. Orwell advocated for a simplistic style of writing and was skeptical of self-proclaimed intellectuals and those who were pretentious and looked down on those less fortunate than themselves. Orwell is remembered as an honest journalist and author who wrote for the common person and sought to help those in need. In the truest sense of the word he was an activist and advocate for rights. He called for the independence of European colonies and was nearly killed in his fight against fascism.
